Beef producer water reuse project aids local farmer

Feb. 10, 2023
The National Beef Packing Company wastewater treatment plant in Kansas reuses process water to irrigate a local farm and reduce strain on the Ogallala Aquifer.

To meet state requirements, National Beef constructed a wastewater treatment plant that not only reduces its reliance on the Ogallala Aquifer but also reuses water for irrigation of a local farm. The project required considerable coordination between the city, the farmer, National Beef and the state to meet its goals.

David Kalscheur, vice president of engineering for National Beef Packing Company, explains why the project was important to the company and how it strived to meet water reuse goals to reduce strain on the local aquifer. Eric Staab, professional environmental engineer in the industrial programs group for the Bureau of Water in Kansas Department of Health and Environment, highlights the state’s involvement and how the plant’s Bardenpho technology became part of the solution to meeting the state’s requirements.
